HIRING AN AERIAL SPECIALIST

So you want to have some aerial photographs or video taken of your new listing? Below, I’m going to explain what steps to take in order to research and hire a reputable company for your needs. With todays growing popularity of drone photography and videography, especially in the Real Estate market, it’s tough to know who to hire, how much to pay and what to expect for the money. I’m going to simplify things for those thinking about hiring an aerial specialist. I’m also going to explain that purchasing an $800 drone and learning to fly it is NOT the best solution to your aerial real estate needs, nor is it legal. STEP 1 – Determine if Aerial Services are even required Don’t get caught up in the hype of aerial photography for real estate. The first thing to consider is does your subject justify aerial photography to begin with? Ask yourself the questions; Will aerial photography add anything to the listing presentation? Is the proximity of the home to the city important to show? Is it a large property that can only be seen or appreciated from the air? Are there numerous things going on, on the property that […]

HOME SELLS IN ONE DAY BECAUSE OF REAL ESTATE VIDEO

I created this video for clients in #victoria as it was a special property that was possibly going to take some time to sell. The posted the video and the same day the buyer requested a showing in 20 minutes. He expressed that the video was a powerful tool in engaging his interest in the property. This is one more reason why video should be used in all high end real estate listings.

Professional or not?

Hi there, I’m a professional photographer….or am I? This is a warning to everyone thinking about hiring a “professional photographer” to do your homework whether it’s portraits or to photograph your home or listing. The definition of a professional photographer is one who makes their living shooting photographs. I bet you didn’t know that? That’s all one has to do to claim the status as a professional photographer. There is no certification or diploma necessary. Can you imagine if people starting calling themselves professional structural engineers or professional surgeons then marketing their cookie cutter websites and posting on local classifieds as such claiming they will give you that operation you need at a discount price or draw up plans to your new high rise for you way cheaper than the other guys? I’m sure you’ve all experienced this in the past whether it was that you received horrible wedding photos or engagement portraits or your realtor hired a professional real estate photographer and when you saw the pictures you were confused as they looked awful. Don’t ever be afraid to refuse payment for images you’re not happy with. Here is the problem with the word “professional”. The word sounds great […]

HD VIDEO IS HERE TO STAY

For a few years now I have been researching real estate marketing in different parts of the world, mainly Australia, New Zealand and the USA. I lived in Australia during 2010 and during that time my eyes were opened to an exciting new medium being used which was HD Videos of properties for sale. Each video made me feel like I was watching a movie trailer they were put together so well with the realtor acting in them and doing voice over tours through the home. It made me feel something each time I saw one. It sparked emotion from me. As a real estate photographer myself It made me realize that the market was morphing into a whole new way of doing things and it was only a matter of time before everyone was needing videos to sell their homes. It kick started me into learning a whole new industry to bring back to Canada with me. Back in Canada statistics show that over 50% of households Canada wide have at least one computer and 75% of households living within 300km of the US border have computers connected to the internet. This is an incredible statistic for Real Estate […]

Why I feel HDR imagery will decrease Real Estate Sales

Hi Everyone, There is a lot of conflict on this topic. HDR or not to HDR that is the question (High Dynamic Range). Now I say HDR imagery because I feel it is NOT photography. The definition of Photography is: “Often shortened to: photo an image of an object, person, scene, etc, in the form of a print or slide recorded by a camera on photosensitive material” One could argue that any digital image is also not a Photograph and I suppose technically that would be correct, even though we all get the point here. In my opinion though and I know this is going to tick off a lot of people, HDR photography in Real Estate is for people that do not know how to use a camera properly with supplemental lighting. There I said it, it’s for amateurs calling themselves professionals. Who’s to stop them though?? Some realtors look at their images and think “hey it’s better than I can do and my client will be impressed because their house looks better than it really is”. In my opinion that’s exactly why you should run from any photographer that uses HDR. I’m going to explain why I DO […]

Image featured in Environment Canada Lightening Preparedness video

Earlier this spring I was contacted by Environment Canada asking me to use an image I had sent into Castanet last summer of an image of lightening I captured. The way I captured the image was to set up the camera on a sturdy tripod out of the rain. In this case it was on my balcony where I was living at the time up in Wilden. When I felt I had the interval timing down of the strike frequency I then set my ISO to the lowest setting (50) which required a lot of light to expose the shot, therefore requiring the shutter to remain open longer than normal. I then proceeded to hold the remote shutter down on the camera capturing one 3 second exposure after another until the lightening struck and hoping one of those exposures grabbed it. Well it did with great success!! I was pleased that Environment Canada appreciated the image so much that they wanted to use it as part of there awareness and preparedness video that was just recently released on their website.

Great Video explaining why to use professional photography for your listings

I found this video online from a fellow Real Estate Photographer Lance Selgo, who’s based in Texas. He explains through a magazine article why it’s so important, especially in todays generation for the use of professional images for real estate listings. I myself when shopping for a home to buy or vehicle or anything else for that matter will eliminate a potential immediately if the images aren’t there, are inadequate or not enough. The more information and more eye catching representative images there are to look at or video the better the chances it will grab my interest. Having a professional come in and photograph your listings has proven time and time again to better your chances in the saturated market out there. It used to be a time where only top producing sellers could afford a professional but with todays advancements in technology, professional photography has changed and has become more affordable. This is another topic of discussion though which will be my next blog discussion…for now enjoy the video and please leave comments.
